You’ve found yourself here and now you’re wondering…
“Who on earth is she?!”
The short answer is that I’m Kathryn (But you can call me Kate) And this is Project Patterns, the space I created to share my love of pattern cutting with the world.
I’m a professional pattern cutter, and I’ve spent the last decade working for some of the top fashion brands in London.
I’ve been lucky enough to see my work on catwalks, huge international campaigns, celebrities, red carpets and Royals.
Some of my career highlights include dressing Michelle Obama and top British Royals.
And of course, lots of celebrities too!
Although nothing beats opening Vogue up and finding your work inside.
It’s a new level of “thanks, I made it!”
Most of my current client work is top secret, but you can browse through some older work below.
I’m slightly biased, but I think pattern cutting is the unsung hero of the fashion world.
It’s an incredible skill.
It’s clever problem solving and honestly just a really fun craft to practice.
I want to share my knowledge and experience with you, so that you can create unique, perfectly fitting clothes too!
I am also one half of the Fashion Half Cut podcast.
My Co-host, Caroline, and I talk about pattern cutting, technical fashion and everything in between.
We don’t release new episodes anymore, but there are 53 juicy episodes up there for you to binge!
You can also hear me on The New Craft House podcast, where I spoke to Hannah about my journey, pattern cutting and the fashion industry.
My mum taught me to sew, so it’s always been in my life.
And I’m proud to say that I’ve never lived in a house without a sewing machine in it!
But my real training began when I went to Bath Spa University to study Fashion Design.
I was given an amazing education in the basics of pattern cutting which really built the foundations of my knowledge.
From there I went straight into the industry to learn my technical knowledge first hand and build on what I already knew.
Fast forward a decade and I am humbled to have worked with some amazing pattern cutters, designers, technical experts and have had the opportunity to learn from them.
I started teaching pattern cutting in 2018 and haven’t looked back since!
I am a firm believer that everyone should learn how to create their own clothing.
For me, that doesn’t just involve learning how to sew but also how to draft and fit your own patterns.
I’ve gone from teaching local classes to helping thousands of students all over the world, and I’m just getting started!
I love working for big brands. And I also love of teaching!
I’m now hoping that I can share my knowledge and maybe even inspire a few people to become pattern cutters themselves!
Project Patterns is all about trying to teach the art of pattern cutting to anyone and everyone who has an interest in learning.
So stay tuned for tutorials, tips and tricks galore!
