Last-Minute Holiday Makes for Late Summer
It may be early September, but there is still sunshine to catch. If you have a last-minute break on the horizon, or you just want a small lift before autumn arrives, these quick projects are perfect.
Each one is light to pack, simple to sew, and easy to wear from beach to brunch. Pick a pattern today, sew this weekend, and pop it straight into your suitcase.
Why Quick Projects Matter
There's something incredibly satisfying about starting and finishing a make in a short timeframe. It keeps your creative energy flowing and gives you that wonderful "I made this!" feeling without weeks of commitment.
Quick projects are also perfect for experimenting with new techniques, trying out fabric combinations, or testing patterns before committing to a more involved version. Think of them as playful making, sewing that reminds you why you fell in love with sewing and pattern cutting in the first place!
The One-Day Wonder: Simple Cami Top

Time needed: 3-4 hours
Fabric required: 1-1.5m lightweight fabric
A well-fitted cami is the cornerstone of a summer wardrobe, and the beauty is that it requires very little fabric and time! With just a metre or so of your favourite lightweight cotton, linen, or rayon, you can create a versatile piece that works alone or as a layering essential.
Drafting Tips:
Use your basic bodice block as a starting point, change the neckline (don't forget your contouring!) and width at the waist and length.
Don't forget to make sure the hem is wide enough the fit over your hips (your skirt block can be helpful here!)
Speedy Construction Suggestions:
Use bias binding (cut around 3cm wide) for neckline and armholes
Pin hem or double turn the hem for a lightweight feel
Add fuse tape or stay stitch the armholes and necklines to avoid them stretching off
The Afternoon Project: Elastic-Waist Shorts

Time needed: 3-4 hours
Fabric required: 1.5m medium-weight fabric
Nothing says summer quite like comfortable shorts! With about an afternoon's work, you can create a pair that's perfectly fitted to your body, no more struggling with ready-to-wear sizing.
Drafting tips:
Use your basic trouser block (or any well fitting trouser pattern that you have at home) as the starting point.
Shorten the leg and convert the darts to fullness in the waist line.
Move the side seam out at the waist, hip and hem to add some more width through the body.
Straighten off the side seams so that the hem is square and the waist measurement is the same as your hip.
Speedy Construction Suggestions:
Create a straight elastic channel for the waistband
Finish seams with French seams or overlocked edges
Double turn the hem or create a deep hem turn
Bonus Idea: Easy Kaftan/Cover-up
Time needed: 3-4 hours of relaxed sewing
Fabric required: 1.5-2m lightweight fabric
Perfect for beach days or lounging at home, a simple kaftan can be made in just a few hours. The ultimate low-pressure project with minimal fitting concerns but maximum comfort payoff.
This simple rectangle garment is super quick and easy to create!
Drafting Steps:
Use your bodice block (or a well fitting top pattern that you have at home) for the neckline shape.
Create a rectangle measuring the length of your kaftan and quarter of the garments required hip measurement.
Label one side as the CF/CB and trace on your block neckline, starting at the same shoulder point.
Use the top edge of the rectangle as your shoulder and sleeve seam: Make longer or shorter as required and curve into the side seam around the hip area.
Trace two copies and use one with the front neckline, and one with the back neckline.
Speedy Construction Suggestions:
Don't forget to leave the top third of the side seam open to act as your armhole/sleeve cuff
Leave the centre front open, but cut the centre back on the fold
Finish the front edge and neckline with a slightly wider visible binding to give some stability to the area but also create a quick, clean finish
Design variations:
Add a channel with elastic or ties under the bust for gentle shaping
Try contrasting binding for visual interest
Consider a high-low hem for modern appeal
Time-saving tip: Use pre-made bias binding for all edges if you want to focus on construction rather than preparation.
Tips for Successful Weekend Projects
To ensure your quick make becomes a beloved wardrobe piece, keep these principles in mind:
Prepare properly: Pre-wash your fabric and set up your space with good lighting and sharp tools. Even quick projects benefit from proper preparation.
Choose forgiving fabrics: Weekend projects aren't the time to wrestle with difficult materials. Stick to stable cottons, linens, and rayons that behave predictably.
Embrace "good enough": Aim for clean, functional results rather than couture-level details. The joy is in the making and the quick satisfaction.
Test as you go: Try on garments at key stages rather than waiting until the end. It's much easier to adjust the length before hemming.
Celebrate completion: Wear or use your finished project right away! This immediate gratification reinforces the pleasure of making.
Final Thoughts
Summer sewing doesn't have to mean lengthy, complex projects. These quick makes allow you to enjoy the satisfaction of creating whilst still having plenty of time to wear and enjoy your new garments in the warmth of the season.
The key is choosing projects that match your available time and energy whilst still feeling rewarding. Whether you have two hours or two days, there's a perfect summer project waiting for you.
